S.T.A.R. Safety Training Program

 

S.T.A.R. 2016

The following courses listed below are choices for the 2016 S.T.A.R. Program. Please take the time to review, and select the courses which will best meet your safety training and upgrading needs.

Successfully completing any Two S.T.A.R. Safety Courses or One S.T.A.R. Safety Course and One Training Upgrade listed below in 2016 are necessary to be qualified in the 2016 S.T.A.R. Program.

Abrasive Blasting SSPC-7 (16 HOURS)

This course is designed to certify operators of dry abrasive or portable centrifugal blast cleaning equipment. It covers principles of surface preparation, surface cleanliness, surface profile, dust and debris control, and abrasives. The program’s primary focus is the certification of the blasters who demonstrate proper blasting techniques during the hands-on session.


Aerial Lift Operator Training/Fall Protection Awareness Training (3.5 HOURS) 

This course is designed to be general in nature and addresses issues regarding Responsibility, safety procedures prior to operating aerial platforms, and finishes with hands-on. The fall protection course is designed to heighten awareness, knowledge and the elimination of fall hazards. Emphasis will be placed on Identification of fall hazards, types of fall protection, safe work practices, fall hazard assessment on the job, hands on training with P.P.E. equipment. (Aerial Lift Card valid for 3 years.)


Commercial Faux Finishes (20 HOURS)

This course allows novices or seasoned professionals to learn about the products and application techniques developed for the professional faux finisher. This intense class will cover everything needed to bring IUPAT painting and decorating tradesperson skills to a higher level. Starting with the basics, and progressing through the full range of Faux Effects products the course participant will complete a number of samples.


Commercial Wall Covering (12 HOURS)

This course is designed to provide an overview of state-of-the-art wall covering tools and techniques used by some of the prominent manufacturers in the trade. A blend of classroom instruction and hands-on applications during this course will give the journey worker an introduction to how these tools and techniques may improve the quality and efficiency of wall covering work.


Construction Green Awareness (4 HOURS) 

One of the most popular and potentially influential socio-economic issues currently under discussion is that of Sustainability, which includes energy efficiency and high performance and “green” building.  This course will present the basics including definitions, benefits, and elements of Sustainability and will focus on related theories, practices, methods, and materials in construction, conscientious maintenance and awareness in lifestyle to ensure the quality and sustainability of our planet.


Disaster Response (4 HOURS)

This course is intended to help provide safety and health orientation training for building trades construction workers responding to a catastrophic event as skilled support personnel. The goal of this training is to increase worker awareness of some hazards that may be present on a disaster site.


E.P.A. Lead Renovator, Repair and Painting (RRP) (8 HOURS)  NEW*

This course is intended supervisors or owners whodoing work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes or child occupied facilities built before 1978 and where more than 6 sq. ft. of interior paint in any one room or 20 sq. ft. of paint on exterior surfaces will be disturbed by renovations and the surfaces to be disturbed has not been proven to be lead free.


Epoxy Concrete Toppings and Coatings: Ardex (8 HOURS)

This course is designed to provide participants an overview of state-of-the-art protective and decorative coating products, tools, and application techniques offered by ARDEX Engineered Cements. This course is targeted toward coating applicators that prepare the surface and apply coatings such as acrylic, epoxy, or urethane. A blend of classroom instruction and hands-on applications during this course will give participants an in-depth perspective into how these products, tools and application techniques may improve the quality and efficiency of floor coating work processes.


Foreman Training (8 HOURS)

Construction leaders in North America manage billions of dollars and millions of craft workers each year. In tens of thousands of construction companies the competence, judgment and capacity of leaders determines the bottom line. This course is designed to focus on Construction leadership and responsibility. For people. For materials. For risk. For money. For client satisfaction. It is a challenge. It is a privilege. It is a profession.


Glaziers FG-2 License (40 HOURS) 

This course will provide the opportunity for Glaziers who are preparing to take the State of Connecticut FG-2 licensing test, to review the FTI of SNE Inc curriculum, the National Glazing Association curriculum and other materials covered on the examination. Some topics to be covered include: Storefront, entrances, curtainwall systems, and the safety glazing code.


Lead Worker Training (8 HOURS)   

This Lead Worker course addresses the OSHA standards related to lead exposure, corrective actions and safe work practices to minimize exposure, and the rights  and responsibilities of workers when dealing with lead. This course supplies the basic training needed when worker where lead is present.


Lead Worker Refresher (4 HOURS)

This Course is a yearly review of OSHA standards related to lead worker exposure.. (Prerequisite successfully completed an 8 Hour Lead Worker Course).


Lead Training for Deleading of Industrial Structures SSPC-3 (24 HOURS)                                                

This course focuses on the training of safe work practices when removing lead based coating from various industrial structures. Topics include: the characteristics and uses of lead, recognizing toxic metals and materials in coatings, federal statutes governing air, soil, water, and dust, control measures and monitoring to comply with regulations.


Lead Training Deleading Industrial Structures Refresher SSPC-5 (8 HOURS)

This Course is a yearly review of safe work practices when removing lead based coating from various industrial structures. (Prerequisite successfully completed a 24 Hour SSPC 3 Training for Deleading of Industrial Structures Course).


Lull/Forklift Training (6 HOURS)

The purpose of this course is to provide an awareness of safe work practices and safe driving skills for operators of powered industrial trucks. This training covers OSHA’s training requirements for operators of forklifts or lulls required in standard 29 CFR 1910.178


OSHA 10 Construction Outreach (10 HOURS)

This 10-Hour course is designed to heighten the awareness of workers to be able to identify hazards on there work site. Topics include (3) required 1-hour topics Introduction to OSHA, electrical, fall protection. The other topics include ladder safety, hazard communication, material handling, and lockout/ tagout, confined space, air purifying respirators, slips trips and falls. (OSHA 10 card valid in CT for 5 years.)


OSHA 30 Construction Outreach (40 HOURS) 

This 40-Hour course is designed to fully involve the participant with 29 CFR 1926 Construction Industry Regulations. Beginning with the Introduction to OSHA and how to navigate thru it’s  regulations. Guest speakers from OSHA and the construction industry will present topics covering the complete standard.  Subpart A- General thru Subpart Z-Toxic and Hazardous Substances will be covered.  (OSHA 30 card valid in CT for 5 years.)


Respirator Fit Test (2.5 HOURS)

A Respiratory Protection programs main objective is to reduce workers exposure to airborne contaminants. Call and schedule your Respirator fit testing after completing a yearly OSHA respirator training course.(covered in the OSHA 10 course, the Disaster Response Course and The Lead Worker Training Course) A medical questionnaire must be answered and a fit test passed. Participants must be clean shaven. (Respiratory Fit card valid for 1 year.)


Rigging Class (8 HOURS)

This course covers general topics related to the safe operation of Crane Rigging, in compliance with State and Federal standards regarding selection, application, use & inspection of rigging hardware & slings used in overhead hoisting.


Scaffolding Erector and Dismantler- Safe Work Practices (6.5 HOURS)

This scaffolding course is designed to provide a general introduction to the safety requirements for the constructing and working on scaffolds. Covering pre-planning, inspection, of components, load capacity, access, falling objects, dismantling, and more…


Structural Welding AWS D1-1                     

During this course, participants will undergo a rigorous program of study to get them versed with the codes/standards associated with the AWS Certified Welding. Participants will learn the fundamentals of welding.


Survival of the Fittest (8 HOURS) 

This course is designed to provide apprentices and journey workers with vital skills, attitudes and behavior necessary to compete in today’s industry. This highly interactive course aims to provoke and stimulate training. Student discussions will focus on subjects such as market share, absenteeism, harassment, integrity, competition, supervision, and  money management.


USG Special Coatings (4 HOURS) 

This presentation by a United Stated Gypsum Co. representative will review all the latest produces and hands on application techniques including spray coating, faux finishes and corner bead installation.


Workplace Training CPR/AED/FA (6.5 HOURS)                                 

This course includes The American Red Cross emergency response, automated external defibrillation, and cardiovascular pulmonary resuscitation. (ARC CPR/AED cards valid for 1-year). 4 Hour class. The American Red Cross work place First Aid. (ARC FA cards valid for 3- years). 2.5 Hour class.


Workplace Steward Training Program (4 HOURS) 

This new program provides training for District Council 11 stewards and is based on the IUPAT Top Workplace performance Plan that we have implemented
